Six Book Challenge Awards Day

Congratulations to all those students who have completed this year's Six Book Challenge. You've done really well. In recognition of that and the large number of particpants we had this year, the Library has decided to have an awards ceremony.
On Monday 28th May at 10am we will be welcoming Genevieve Clark from The Reading Agency (who run the Six Book Challenge) and author Rosie Rushton. They will be here to talk to students and hand out certificates to those who have finished. This is really great news and a wonderful opportunity for students to talk to people directly involved with the Challenge and who want to hear your success stories, and someone who writes for young people.
Tutors have been informed of all details for the ceremony, but other students are welcome in at 11am if they have any questions for either of our guests.

Hi All. A few weeks ago I posted about our Daventry Librarian, Hannah, winning an opportunity to take part in World Book Night. She won 25 copies of Let The Right One In which she then had to give away to people. Hannah chose to do this in the Library at Daventry. Here's how she got on.

"So it’s the 24^th April and World Book Night was last night, but I am still here with my books ready and eager to give them out in the cold light of day!

With a beautiful display put together by my library assistant Jeannette that proclaimed, “Free Books!! Please take one!” - the students sat hunched over paperwork and computers very studiously, but looking nervously over wondering “Free?.... Books?” rather unsure about what this was actually all about.

So I decided to take the plunge and start wandering about the library trying to offer my wares – a copy of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s ‘Let the Right One In!’ “Would you like a free book?” I proclaim. “Erm yes,” says the student and I immediately feel a flush of pleasure – someone wants my book! I tentatively then break the news to them that I would also like to take their photo of me handing the book over, as the proud Giver. However, it seems that despite being extremely camera shy and flushing deep scarlet, a free book is a worthy prize to subject oneself to the flash of the camera. Spurred on by my success, I then grab more copies and soon they are flying off the display to rather pleased students.

These books were most definitely not “left on the outside, cold and lonely amongst the shelves” like many a fiction book finds itself in the Academic Library. One student said “Oh wonderful, I needed a new book to read. “ Another said, “Oh I will read this, then my son, then my sister, then my mother-in law,” – well that is one book that has its journey planned out already.  This is one happy Librarian and 24 happy students all pleased to receive a book, even during this high pressure exam time, which overall makes one successful World Book Night 2012.

 The following day one of my library assistants said, “did you get rid of all your books Hannah?” I said “yes,” she said “Good”. Job done!"

It's time to revise!!

For those students who have exams coming up in the near future the Library staff would like to wish you all good luck and to remind you that we are here to help.
If you are struggling to organise your revision into manageable chunks call into the library and speak to a member of staff. We can help to make this stressful revision time easier by giving you advice and tips.

For AS and A2 students we have a room at Booth Lane which is being dedicated to you for revision time. Ask staff for more details. We also have displays, books and leaflets with lots of handy advice to help you out.

In the spirit of sharing, if any of you have any tips which you think could benefit others who are revising, why not post them on this board. I'll get the ball rolling.

Handy Tip- Don't try to do too much at once. Break your revision down according to priority (ie, which exam comes first) and don't put off the hard topics. They're not going anywhere and will just seem worse the longer you leave them.

The Library at Northampton College is running some fantastic competitions at the moment. You can choose from:

 

Short Story and Book Review Competition

• If you would like to enter please submit one story of a maximum of 1500 words on any subject you wish or
• a book review with a maximum of 500 words on a book you have read recently

Photography Competition

• If you would like to enter please submit one photograph, size A4, on the subject of 'College Architecture'

The deadline for both competitions is April 2nd 2012. You will need to attach an entry form to each submission, which you can download from the library website or pick up from any of the College Library sites.

World Book Night Winner!!

Congratulations to our Daventry Librarian Hannah Gibson, who has won the opportunity to give away 24 copies of one of her favourite books, in a competition held to mark World Book Night.
World Book Night is a celebration of reading and books which sees tens of thousands of people gift books within their communities to spread the joy and love of reading. Hannah submitted her entry and was lucky enough to be selected to give away 24 copies of 'Let The Right One In' by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Hannah says:
"I intend to give the books away in my College Library. Most people may believe that the students using the library are heavy book users, but they would be wrong in one respect. College libraries have a strong focus on books related to the curriculum- textbooks and more textbooks, e-resources and the internet all leave the fiction book on the outside, cold and lonely amongst the shelves. These young minds are so busy with their studies that the average fiction book for pleasure is totally overlooked. By giving them this book I hope to spark their enthusiasm for fiction which will lead to a lifetime of reading."
World Book Night will take place on April 23rd 2012. Why not have a look at some of the events that may be happening in your area to celebrate the love of reading.
