What you reading?

Hello Everyone,

Just wondered what you are reading at the moment. Over the Christmas break I didn't read the Charles Dickens book I said I was going to (will make that next December's read). I did however read Astray by Emma Donoghue and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.

Astray by Emma Donoghue
A collection of short stories based around historical documents and people, which have been found and researched by Donoghue. They mostly concern the varying struggles for life of the late 17th- 19th century settlers in the America, although there are more modern tales too. It was a good read, made even more interesting by the inclusion, at the end of each story, a snippet from the author about what had made her write that story. Recommended.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
I've come to expect some darkness from this author and this story does not disappoint. It is the tale of Nobody, a young boy who has had to live in a graveyard with ghosts looking out for him after a major event at the beginning of his life. This is a great book, I really enjoyed it, so much so that I have decided to read all of Neil Gaiman's books (have already read Good Omens and am currently reading Odd and the Frost-Giants to my daughter). I forsee The Graveyard Book being made into a film, along the lines of Coraline, another of Gaiman's works.
So what are you all reading at the moment. Reply to this post- let's get everyone reading!!

New Year

Welcome back everyone, hope you all had a good break and are now enjoying the Winter Wonderland.
We've already achieved so much this academic year such as:
  • Study Skills sessions delivered to hundreds of students from all levels, across all three sites
  • Short Story/Poetry competition success (well done again winners, you can find the winning entries on our library website)
  • Hundred of students signing up to the Six Book Challenge, already, with many more predicted to join.
  • Introduction of the 'Everlasting Festival of Reading'
  • Wonderful amount of money raised by you for the Wallace & Gromit Children's Foundation, by your particpation in our Tea Party (£504.01)
Thank you all for any of the contributions you have made to the above activities- without the staff and students our Libraries would be much duller places. But wait...there is still more to come!!
  • 'Reading Journey' for students (level 3) who are interested in improving their reading by committing to read a chosen number of books between now and June. You will receive a prize and certificate for taking part
  • Photography Competion in March
  • Book Review competition to coincide with World book Day (7th March)
  • Reading Group once a month on a Friday (check with the Library for dates & times). You can particpate through this blog if that is easier- keep checking the posts
  • You could book a revision/exam tips session with the Learning Facilitators if you are worried about any up coming exams
  • Completion of Six Book Challenge
Phew!! So much stuff, I'm out of breath now. There may be more things going on as the year progresses, so keep checking this blog, Twitter and our notice boards to keep you up-to-date.
Enjoy the rest of your year, work hard and get the best results you can.

Wallace and Gromit update

Thank you to everyone who took part or contributed to the Wallace and Gromit Tea Party, which took place across all three libraries last week. With your help we managed to raise...

£504.01

This is a fantastic amount which will go to help sick children in hospices. Thank you again and we'll hope to see you, same times, same places next year.

Everlasting Festival of Reading

As part of Northampton College Library's aim to encourage a culture of reading, we would like to hear from people about what kind of books they like to read, who their favourite authors are, or what they are reading at the moment.
For me, as it's a seasonal book which seems appropriate- Dickens at Christmas by, of course, Charles Dickens. It includes A Christmas Carol and other stories he wrote for this time of year. I will let you know how I get on with it soon.

If you have any books or authors you would like to tell other people about, then please respond to this post. Merry Christmas and happy reading.

"We've forgotten the crackers Gromit!!"

It's that time of year again, when the Libraries at all 3 centres try to raise money for Wallace & Gromit's Children's Hospices by holding a Tea Party. You can pop in, have a a cup of tea or coffee and a cake (for a small charge of course, this is for charity!) and also learn more about some of the activities which happen in the Library. This includes Six Book Challenge 2012, Everlasting Festival of Reading, Information & Study Skills and E-resources, amongst others.
There will be a couple of games to take part, raffles at some of the centres with prizes to be won. So do come in and help us make this the best W&G Tea Party ever.
